Play: Briefing a new CTO before their first board update

How infra and security vendors land in the new CTO's first board update at a Series B or C SaaS.

The signal

A new CTO or Head of Engineering joins a Series B or C SaaS in the last 60 days. Often inheriting a mixed stack and an open security backlog.

Satellyte ties the appointment to the company stage, public stack, and recent incidents so you can rank the highest-pressure conversations first.

What it means

They will inherit tech debt, security findings, and a roadmap they did not write. The first board update is roughly 60 days out. They need a credible diagnosis to anchor that update.

Vendors who show up with the diagnosis (not the demo) get briefed in.

The play

1. Send a one-page diagnostic

Their public surface area: stack, hires, recent incidents, dependencies, security posture. Not a pitch, a read.

2. Frame the board narrative

What the new CTO can credibly commit to in the first board update, given what you see. They will use your framing.

3. Offer a peer call with another CTO

A CTO who took over a similar mess and how they staged the cleanup. New CTOs trust other new CTOs more than vendor decks.

Sample first message

Congrats on the [Company] role. Quick read of your public stack and incident history if useful: [3 bullets]. Most new CTOs in your shape commit to one of three things in the first board update, here is what tends to land. Happy to share, no pitch attached.

When to skip this play

If the CTO is the founder, this play does not apply. Use the Funding play instead.

Where to go next

Pair with Hiring: a new CTO landing alongside an engineering hiring surge is the strongest infra-spend signal on the platform.
